We've just heard from Michael Carter at NOAA's Cordell Bank facility in California.  They've recently used our LANC controller board embedded in their underwater ROV.  My previous blog post shows the ROV they are using.

The controller is used to manage a Canon HD camera in the ROV from the surface support ship.  Our Windows LANC software was used to remotely control the camera functions in the ROV.  The camera is used to record underwater images (both video and stills).

On this particular cruise, NOAA was removing marine debris from the bottom near Monterey.  Michael was kind enough to send along a few photos:

When I asked Michael how our controller and software worked on their cruise -- his answer was "perfectly".

That's what we like to hear!

Researchers are using a remotely operated vehicle and satellite-linked data loggers to learn more about turtle behavior in commercial fishing areas and to develop new ways to avoid catching turtles in fishing gear. This marks the first time an ROV has been used to follow turtles in the wild to learn about their behavior and how they interact with their habitat

Marine biologists examined whether Laysan albatrosses nesting on Kure Atoll and Oahu, Hawaii, 2,150 km away, ingested different amounts of plastic by putting miniaturized tracking devices on birds to follow them at sea and examining their regurgitated stomach contents. Surprisingly, birds from Kure Atoll ingested almost ten times the amount of plastic compared to birds from Oahu.

Although there is no official standard such as ISO within the yacht insurance industry to guarantee complete consistency across carriers, most policies have developed many common denominators. Hull, protection and indemnity, medical payments, personal effects, uninsured boater's liability, towing and emergency assistance and even pollution coverage have all become accepted as essential elements within a policy.

Researchers have developed an ‘ecological risk assessment’ a three-step method that considers targeted and incidentally caught species, as well as threatened, endangered and protected species. Ongoing research is further developing the method for habitats and ecological communities.
